Fontanacervo dairy products obtain Friend of the Earth international certification for sustainable agriculture and farming production
The company Fontanacervo, located by Turin’s countryside, has achieved Friend of the Earth international certification for sustainable agriculture and farming production. Its dairy produce can now carry the Friend of the Earth eco-label.
Fontanacervo’s products comprise high quality milk, cream, yoghurt, desserts and fresh and ripe cheese. The company manages the complete production process, from cultivated fields for forage to production and processing of milk.
First agricultural and farming practices in the area date back to the XVII Century, defining the distinctive landscape. Livestock is reared with no impact to the surrounding aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Milk production corresponds to low density farming parameters: each cow produces about 20-22 litres of milk per day, compared with 32-38 litres of intensive farms.
“We are particularly fond of the Friend of the Earth certification, as it allows us to independently confirm our full engagement to environmental sustainability”, explains Mr. Giovanni Crivello of Fontanacervo.
Fontanacervo is an agricultural company managed by Crivello Family since XVII century and based in Villastellone near Turin. In the 90s, the company starts producing yogurt. In 2004 the site is potentiated for the production of cheese in addition to milk. The company manages the complete production process, from cultivated fields for forage to milk production and processing.
Since 2008 Fontanacervo has been member of “Maestri del Gusto”, a recognition of excellent wine-and-food connoisseurship of Turin awarded by “Camera di Commercio di Torino” in cooperation with Slow Food.
Friend of the Earth
Friend of the Earth is a non-profit project for the certification of products from sustainable agriculture and farming. Coming from the positive experience of the Friend of the Sea certification for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, Friend of the Earth is rapidly growing as the leading international label for sustainable agriculture production.
Friend of the Earth certification requirements are based on FAO's SAFA guidelines for sustainable agriculture and farming. Certified production sites cannot be developed on critical habitats and producers must have a social and environmental management system in place, be compliant with national environmental laws, conserve existing ecosystems and reduce their impacts to a sustainable level.
